Summary Of The Purpose Of Freedom's Journal

The purpose of Freedom's Journal, the first African-American-owned and operated newspaper in the United States, was to advocate for the abolition of slavery and the advancement of the rights and interests of the Black community. In the first issue of Freedom's Journal, published on March 16, 1827, the founders stated their mission "to plead our own cause. Too long have others spoken for us." In an editorial, the founders of Freedom's Journal wrote: "We wish to plead our own cause. Too long have others taken upon themselves to be the interpreters of our views on political subjects." A contemporary review in the New York Enquirer praised the newspaper's "manly and independent tone" in addressing the "wrongs and disabilities of the colored population."
