Cooper, Corrigan, and Watson evaluate the relationship between the multidimensional models of stigma and seeking help from health care staff. The authors illustrates that some dimension of stigma are associated with health care seeking, while others were not. The authors explain that people viewed those with mental illness as responsible for their illness and reacted with anger toward them were less likely to seek medical treatment.While others viewed them as dangerous and violent and the emphasis they seek health care was not consistent with the research.The authors conclude stating that removing personal responsibility for a mental illness may increase public openness to seek healthcare when in need.
