Child abuse is defined by the world health organization as any form of physical or psychological maltreatment of a minor (2016). There are different types of abuse which can include physical, sexual and emotional abuse, negligent treatment and exploitation; all of which the outcome is severe injuries and possible harm to a child’s health (2016). Research suggests that 79% of the primary abusers are the child’s parents or caregivers (NCANDS). Not only is child abuse physically and emotionally harmful, it can also cause long-term effects such as social disparities and psychopathological problems (Tuscic, Flander & Mateskovic, 2013). The effects from the different types of child abuse can differ depending on the type or types of abuse experienced, but they all cause developmental problems that will affect you now or in the future. I will focus on the four most common types of abuse which are neglect, physical, sexual and emotional abuse and provide an overview of the short and long term effects of each form of abuse. …show more content…
Neglect is defined as lack of attention or nurturing behavior by the parent. This also includes failure to provide the basic survival needs to the child such as clothing, food, or shelter. It has been stated by the CDC that children who are victims of abuse are at an increase rate for smoking, alcoholism and drug abuse (2016). Not only are they are risk for these social issues, but they are also at risk for insecurities, low-self-esteem, trust issues, lack of social skills and development growth all of which are an import part of self-growth. These issues can really impact a child life now and later down the line. Research suggests that those that experience childhood abuse meet the criteria for psychiatric disorders by the age of 21 (Tuscic et. Al,
