Throughout the 1800’s, American and British leaders wanted to quickly and cheaply ship goods between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Although this project was a good idea, the builders faced many obstacles. For example, many workers got diagnosed with malaria and yellow fever on their work site. This caused a loss of approximately 20,000 lives.
