‘I was thinking maybe I could pick up some really neat stuff in the street’” (Potok 61). In this quote, Zebra wants to be friends with Andrea, the freckle-faced, redheaded girl with ultra thick spectacles, since he says that he would like to walk with her, too. The reader can guess that Zebra’s dejected emotions have tweaked and he desires to be more open and social due to his sudden decision of wanting to walk with Andrea. The reader can also assume that Zebra craves to do something with his melancholy life instead of invariably cringing in pain because he tells Andrea that he could find items on the street while walking beside her. The unusual selection of Zebra wanting to obtain neat stuff in the street was caused by John Wilson’s summer art course because the reader can infer that he is most likely going to create something artistic with the junk he finds in the street. Zebra is introduced as a dismal young boy with a ruined, left arm, but later transforms his emotions in a positive way because of the summer art program that was taught by Zebra’s friend John
