Some examples of super-protected medical information are mental illness and family planning. This type of information could be very harmful to a patient in so many ways if it was released incorrectly. If a wife, for example, does not want a child at this time in her life and is being seen for birth control she might not want her husband to know. Also, both husband and wife could be trying for a child and not want their families to know of these procedures. Any mental illness treatment or even just a diagnosis of mental illness could be very irreparable to a patient socially, and publically. If an employer finds out that there is a mental illness this could cause the patient to be terminated or family and friends might shun that person.
The most important reason is that HIPAA regulations require a separate, written and signed authorization of release of this information, or a subpoena from the courts.
