The story follows two brothers, Derek and Danny, who end up becoming neo-Nazis. The movie is in both color and black and white. Color representing the present day and black and white representing the past. It begins with Danny telling Derek that some black guys are outside trying to take Derek’s car. Derek goes outside to shoot them with his gun. He ends up curb stomping the final victim before the police come and arrest him. Flash forward to Danny, who is in the principal’s office. He is in trouble for writing a paper on “Mein Kampf”. Principal Sweeney decides to become Danny’s teacher, who will now be teaching him American History X. His homework is to write a paper about his brother due the next day. In the following scene, Danny goes into the bathroom where three black students are beating on a white student. Danny gets in one of their faces and blows smoke into his face, and tells them all to leave the white student alone. They back off. It turns out that Derek and Danny’s father, a firefighter, was killed by black drug dealers when trying to put out a fire. This is where Derek and Danny’s racism stems from. The thing is, these white supremacists are not what Derek expected. They have dealings with people in the prison that are not white. Derek hates Hispanics and Blacks and thinks that this is wrong for whites to do, so he dismisses the group. He is also put on laundry duty with a black inmate, Lamont. At first he does not want to anything to do with Lamont, but Lamont is friendly anyway. Derek ends up liking him and they become friendly with one another. This angers the white supremacists and they end up beating up and raping Derek. Principal Sweeney visits Derek that same day and the talk. Derek wants out, he is done with being a white supremacist.
