Surviving the Applewhites is a novel written By Stephanie S. Tolan. The Applewhites are a little bit different from other families, they’ve never fit in with a community, and they never complete anything together, they all think differently. But when jake arrives that totally changes overtime. The butterfly project, and “The Sound Of Music” are huge parts of change in the Applewhites ways, and how Jake, once a menace, turning into a kid with much talent. All of this takes place in North Carolina, and in Wits End in the year 2002. The second way the Applewhites changed was in the play. In the text it says “Dad is going to give Jake a part in The Sound Of Music, a real part, with a song and everything!”(pg, 102). This shows that the Applewhites changed the roles of the play, and later in the story the play was a big success, but if it wasn’t for making changes, and adjusting to what they had, the success of the play would not have happened at all. Jake was a big part of this story and when he changed he learned valuable lessons along the way, I think the butterfly project was essential to the process, as the text states “As soon as the butterfly pumps them up, and they dry out it will fly.” (pg, 159). The metamorphosis between the caterpillar and butterfly is exactly what jake went through, as he changed into a respectable kid. Just like the butterfly when it was ready to fly, Jake was ready to use his talent in the “Sound Of Music”. Before the play, they needed an extra person to take on the role of Gretl, but no girls were available for the role so Randolph changed the play roles so Gretl turned into Hans, so Destiny could take the role.
