In present-day America, societal standards associating with beauty set unrealistic expectations because most influential media portrays body standards that cannot be mimicked by everyone in real life. Due to these unrealistic standards, many Americans have to deal with low self-esteem. Instead of focusing on how we should look, the human body should be celebrated for its uniqueness. Society should stress the importance of being a good person, confident and always being comfortable with yourself. There are times throughout our lives where difficult decisions have to be made. Based on how we choose to handle those decisions and how we react to them, gives a good sense if an individual is being a good person or not. The constant struggle of viewing media and trying to mimic the portrayal of physical characteristics takes us away from being a good person. It makes us focus on ourselves and makes us ignore the situation of others and their importance in our lives. One way to help to stop focusing on us is to practice empathy for others. Having empathy shows you have a good heart that listens and understands the other person’s situation. Not everyone grows up the same way and everyone has different struggles that they go through life with. By understanding others, you can become more conscious towards the situation. This helps establish connections and helps others feel less detached from everybody. Media takes away the comfortableness of one’s own body. Realistically not everyone can be a skinny model. When a person strives for a size zero, they will try everything to become that person on the cover of the magazine. People then signup for a gym membership, but learn in the process that it takes time to slim down to a safe and healthy weight. This leads to people taking weight loss pills and other unnecessary dietary supplements, an unnatural and unhealthy way of losing weight. People are then deemed lazy because they do not put the time and effort into becoming a healthy person. These weight loss pills are a false advertisement and will do nothing to have you become a healthy individual, thus lowering your self-esteem. Everyone on the outside is unique and different, but when we take the time to read and explore the person we notice that there are many characteristics that we were not able to find just by observing him or her. That is why people should be comfortable with their own skin and be proud of who they are. Not everyone can be as skinny as a model or as athletic as a professional athlete.
