In “Sweat,” Hurston uses symbolism of the snake to illustrate the theme of ethic vs morals. The snake is a symbol of Sykes. Like a snake, Sykes is very mean to Delia. He first scares her with a whip, then brings one in the house. Sykes states, “Dat snake aint goin’ no damn wheah till Ah gits ready fuh ‘im tuh go” (Hurston7). While the storm is going on it lead on the affair and passion between Calixta and Alcee. The narrator states, “he looked down into her eyes and there was nothing for him to do but to gather her lips in a kiss” (Chopin par.23). Calixta begins to get scares, and Alcee easies her mind with a kiss. Joseph Rosenblum thinks that Alcee and Calixta are happy. He states, “Alcee is as happy as Calixta” (Rosenblum par.6). They are much happier with each other than they are with their own husband and wife.
In Trifles, Glaspell uses symbolism of the bird to illustrate the theme of ethic vs morals. The bird symbols Mrs. Hale is happy. The narrator states, “she like the bird. She was going to bury it in the that pretty box” (Glaspell 988). She is burying all the old memories and is going to be happy.
In conclusion, the authors show how when you do wrong it will follow. Even though you might not be happy or satisfied with life, it might not be a great idea to do something that you is wrong just to feel happy. We all learn right from wrong when we are young. I think in some situations it is right but could be handle in better
