With men being in the limelight for centuries and women being confined to their shadows, authors used symbolism in their stories to show the injustice of woman oppression . “A Rose for Emily” and “The Yellow Wallpaper” were both written in a time of woman inequality inspiring their authors, William Faulkner and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, to have a similar theme of male dominance. Symbolism is able to show more with underlying themes as long as you read into them. In “The Yellow Wallpaper,” Gilman is able to incorporate the theme of woman’s inequality to men through symbolism.
