All of these quotes state that Philip broke a rule.
“There’s a rule about being quiet at that time.” (pg 42) Philip was being disrespectful, and there really is a rule about singing or humming during the “Star-Spangled Banner. “Ummmm. I thought the kids were supposed to be quiet.” (pg 50). Philip lied and said that Mr. Lunser let’s them sing, but when Mr.Lunser was asked, Mr.Lunser knows the rule but broke it and tried to cover up his mistake. “I though we’d agreed that we have rules in school, we stick with them.” (pg 74) Dr. Palleni is explaining to Philip there are school, that he has to stick to and not break. “You did break the rules.”(pg 77) Philip did something wrong to cause his suspension, which was singing will he was supposed to be silent. “Excuse me, Philip, did you break the rule….. It’s a dumb rule.” Philip admits he did break a rule, but he thinks it is a dumb one.

“I don’t know the words.” (pg 212) Either he didn’t want to sing at his new school, or he really wasn’t being patriotic, and was just trying to annoy Miss Narwin. Talking about what actually happened. “Well I heard him… but he wouldn’t stop…. And she did ask him…. I guess that was the disturbance. (pg 149) A student who witnessed what happened, is saying that Miss Narwin asked Philip to stop but he didn’t, and it caused a disturbance, so he was sent out of class.
Why Philip should win (counter-facts)- “Does the Harrison School District have a rule that forbids students from singing the “Star-Spangled Banner…. Of course not.” This is explaning that there isn’t a rule, but that is false information, because everyone says that there is a rule. “I have the right to do it.” (pg 72) and “It’s a free country.” (pg 74) Philip is saying he can do whatever because it’s a free country but that’s what a 9th grader thinks i right, and he thinks he has the right to do
