Hinton uses the symbol of a sunrise as an example of how identity can bridge the gap between the different classes set by society. Symbolism is used to create a bridge between the greasers and the socs, crossing the social classes which have formed through years of animosity against each other, providing the message that someone’s identity supersedes class. This is directly supported by the symbol of the sunrise and/or the sunset, which Ponyboy and Cherry talk about despite being greasers and socs respectively. This is made obvious when Ponyboy asks “can you see the sunset real good from the West Side?” in which Cherry responds “Real good.” (Pg,? ). Furthermore, later or earlier in the book, Ponyboy comes to the realisation “Maybe the two worlds
