One major symbol that can be discerned is that Ofelia and Vidal are rarely in a shot together. Due to the fact that they are occupied by different physical realms. One occupied in the fantasy realm while the other in the nonfictional realm; each characters are also introduced within those realms. Ofelia introduced flipping the pages to her book of fairy-tales and Vidal looking at his pocket watch. Already showing the turmoil between both characters as they are polar opposites, and the ideals that each of them represents. The film attempts to convey the ideal that one must have an equal amount of imagination and the actuality of what is real to be impacted positively .Which is why in the end, Vidal did not get his wish to be known to his daughter , because of the lack of imagination.
