Israel is the only Jewish state in the world. Most of the population (77.2%) are reported to Judaism of various directions and degrees of adherence to religious rules. The second largest group are Muslims (15.4%), mainly Sunnis. RELIGIOUS FREDOM
The Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel (1948) guarantees religious freedom equally to all its inhabitants. By law, every religious group in Israel has the right to exercise their religion, to observe religious holidays and weekly day of rest and to govern its internal subjects. Religious councils and courts are recognized and respected regarding all religious concerns such as marriage and divorce. Jews prey three times a day. Men and women are usually separated in the synagogues and their heads need to be covered. Services can be done by a rabbi, cantor, or congregant. Rabbi in the Jewish religion is not understood as a mediator of God or as a priest but rather as a teacher. The most important element in synagogues is the Holy Arc, which is directed to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and includes the Torah scrolls that are read in the services over a year.
