Living in a fear based society leaves oneself with the emotional and cultural belief that something about how one lives is wrong. One may be forced to change everything about their identity and new beliefs tend to stay with a being for a small to large period of time. According to “Chapter 2: Drawing the color Lines,” by J. Saunders Redding it says, “The blacks had been torn from their land and culture, forced into a situation where heritage of language, dress, custom, family relations, was bit by bit obliterated except for remnants that blacks could hold onto by sheer, extraordinary persistence.” In other words, fear is the effect of failure and discontent. When the blacks felt that their freedom lives had an obstacle between themselves and emotional health they feared. They only felt the danger in their situation and joy, respect, or even appreciation were alien emotions to themselves. According to the same text, “A People’s History of the United States,” by Howard Zinn in “Chapter 2: Drawing the Color Line,” also states, “The allowance in those times for a man was only eight ounces of meale and half a pint of peas for a day…” Not only were black communities affected, but white families and societies experienced draumatic repercussions.
