Taize Community The Taize community consists of several different aspects that make it interesting. It didn’t always exist, but after it was founded the community now houses about 100 people and is constantly receiving visits from people around the world. The interesting features about Taize include its history, community, and their music. The history of the Taize community was created a long time ago and has established several notable buildings, events, etc. An ecumenical community, Taize consists of several brothers’ located in Burgundy, France. Brother Roger then resided here where he housed the Jews who were trying to get away from the horrible things that were happening during this time (“Taize Community” 2). As a result, in 1949, seven young men devoted themselves to the community which, then caused the Taize community to become a part of the great monastic family (“Taize” 1). The men who joined the community came from different forms of denominations and didn’t abandon them when they merged. In 1942, Brother Roger was forced to leave the community because his activities were discovered by the authorities, but was later allowed to return to the community where he continued ministering to those in need. However, Brother Roger died on August 16, 2005 as a result of three stabs to his throat (Taize 2). A mentally disturbed women committed the crime during a Taize service, but forgave the women because they believed in peacemaking and reconciliation even though they were very angered and upset (“Taize Community” 3). As a result, Bother Alois, a Catholic monk, became his successor (Taize 2). The community consists of multipurpose buildings that surround a church. The Taize community consists of 100 brothers from 30 different countries. Surprisingly, only 65 of them live in the community, while the remaining people engage in mission work across the world. Thousands of people visit the community (“Taize Community” 2) and camp in nearby fields surrounding a church where they also participate in prayer (Taize 1).
