Taking a Stand If individuals who do not have a voice can not stand for themselves then who will? Over the past few years there has been tension between athletes and those in a political position. This tension has been fueled by “the negative appearance” kneeling has during the National Anthem. Some people take this movement as disrespect toward our military members, our nation, and the beliefs of our founding fathers. I myself as a prior service member, disagree with those who oppose this message and agree with the movement these athletes continue to do due to the injustice, corruptness, and brutality this government and some of this nations police officers have toward its minorities, primarily African Americans.
Colin Kaepernick is one of many athletes who took a stand toward police brutality and knelt during the National Anthem. What better way is there to send America a message about the social injustices and brutality of police officers toward African Americans than doing it broadcasted in front of millions of people nationwide and thousands on stage? Especially those who peacefully protest and provide donations to organizations who combat oppression in their communities. These movements created will not be silenced and should be fully supported by every athletic organization we have in America. If we as the people can not have our voices be heard then many people, not just athletes, should be using their platforms to show that we the people will not tolerate a system of government who only treats those with white skin fair and just.
