Tanenbaum’s main argument wraps around the countless reasons why some girls/women might be labeled as a “slut”. The reasons can range from being an early developer or even for being a victim of rape. Tanenbaum argues to show that much more than often the label her interviewees were given had nothing to do with sex. Whether her or her interviewees were given a bad reputation due to not being able to fit in or because they have been a target of revenge, she was able to show how important that time of their life affected their future lives into fitting in with the American ideal of femininity.

Whether you came from they lost it or just never really had it, it is more likely that teens from this class suffer more slut bashing compares to the adolescents whose family is wealthy. Families with a great deal of money are more capable to protect their teens did so by having the option of moving and changing schools to give the teen a “fresh” start.

4. As females go through puberty they are frowned down upon and are forced to hide their body’s development. Men think because a female’s body has matured that means they are ready for sex. Other females think because a young girl’s body has developed that she is a slut for having what the boys are told to want.

5. Through a sex revolution, double standards still stood strong. Men are heavily encouraged to watch porn and have multiple sex partners, but if a woman was even to have one partner, she has ruined her reputation and future of having a female.
