Tar Hollow State Park near Laurelville, Ohio, is a small, quiet park tucked into the rolling hills of southern Ohio. You may be curious about the unique name. I was told that it came from the Pine Tar produced in the area and used as a basis for a multitude of industrial applications in days gone by. Anyone who has ever gotten Pine Tar on their hands knows that there has to be a good use for, but getting it on your hands is not one of them (unless you are trying to hold onto a baseball bat). Some sites are large, some are small, some are open, some are under a canopy of trees, some are great for groups in adjacent sites, and some are quiet secluded from everyone. About 30 of the sites at Tar Hollow State Park offer electricity and some sites allow pets. A shower house and toilets round out the amenities at the Tar Hollow State Park campground, but the campground makes up for its lack of comforts with its peacefulness and quiet. Pine Lake is a small man made lake that offers limited boating options as well as fishing. The lake is restricted to electric motors less than 4 HP. A small boat ramp is available, but those with canoes and kayaks can carry them to the water in a variety of locations. The most popular game fish in Pine Lake are bass, bluegill, and catfish. A small store is conveniently located near the lake and offers snacks, drinks, souvenirs and camping items. This store also rents boats and bikes. There are numerous hiking trails in Tar Hollow State Park, including one trail in excess of 15 miles. Horseback Riding is allowed in the adjacent Tar Hollow State Forest. Trails in Tar Hollow also accommodate both BMX and Mountain
