Chapter five was about the relationship between task focus and people focus. To be a successful leader a person should be able to attend to their task as well as to their relationship with the people who are helping accomplish the task. In my task and relationship questionnaire, I scored a 36 on both task and relationship. My scores showed that I was in the moderately high range of task focus and people focus.
As a part of my observational exercise, I observed an assembly line supervisor and a high school soccer coach. The main difference I noticed in both leaders was that the line supervisor was more task oriented and the soccer coach was more relationship oriented. I noticed the line leader was more concerned about reaching the daily quota and making sure the end product was of quality standards. At the start of the day, he delegated job duties, announced the work schedule for the day, and let the workers know what the daily production goal was for the day. I noticed the soccer coach was more worried about how his players were doing physically and mentally. At the beginning of practice, he spent 10 minutes listening to his players thought of the last game and if they have any suggestions on how to play better as a team. So right now I think my leadership style is more relationship based than task based. Before this job I was very task-based because I was only going to school and I had to make sure I met every deadline. I think I am biased towards relationship leadership because I do have a soft spot for people and I love interacting and making sure all my team members are comfortable and all their needs are met. I believe that if you treat people with love and respect and make sure everyone is happy that things will get done faster and
