The Education and Inspections Act 2006 provides that: “Every school must have a behaviour policy. Every school must have measures to encourage good behaviour and prevent all forms of bullying amongst pupils. These measures should be part of the school’s behaviour policy which must be communicated in writing to all pupils, school staff and parents at least annually.” A Behaviour Policy is a set rules and procedures, clearly communicated, which are designed to enhance the learning and social environment, to promote a positive ethos and state responsibility for those who do not act in an acceptable way. “Establish a safe and stimulating environment for pupils, rooted in mutual respect”. It is important to have behaviour boundaries in order to create a positive environment where pupils can take responsibility for their own actions and be proud of their own achievements. “Teachers must have clear rules and routines for behaviour in classrooms, and take responsibility for promoting good and courteous behaviour… in accordance with the school’s behaviour policy”. A school behaviour policy is important because it gives the pupil and staff a sense of security, safety and consistency. Pupils will test their limits and it is up to the teacher to guide them, but the teacher has to be sensitive to the pupil’s individual needs. In order to apply rules and boundaries you need to know the child’s needs. Teachers need to be good observers in order to know if a pupil is just lazy or genuinely does not
