A teaching assistant's primary responsibility is to support the course instructor to guarantee that the necessary materials are delivered effectively and to provide a supportive learning environment for the students (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee [UW Milwaukee], n.d.). Teaching assistants can be found in various educational levels and subjects, and nursing is no exception. The clinical component of nursing education is crucial because it allows students to apply what they learned in theory to hands-on patient care. Teaching assistants are essential in helping students acquire critical clinical skills and bridging the knowledge gap between theory and practice.

Teaching Fun

The most interesting/fun part about teaching was watching the students connect the concepts that were presented through lectures and apply them to their skills. Teaching at a skills lab allows professors to explain foreign ideas and present them in a hands-on manner, which is very important to many healthcare workers. I believe that this makes me approachable when asking questions. The students and I could relate to each other as I was also a nursing student for not too long. I could see when there was a question or concept that was unclear to them and they may have been too embarrassed to ask. Our section was split into two, with one station being vocabulary/labeling and the other being dressing change. Although I assisted with the dressing change station, I felt more comfortable in the vocabulary/labeling station as I was confident with my knowledge of the parts and purpose of the chest tube.
