Teaching Your Horse to Bow When going through the sessions with your horse, it is also important to know when and when not to reward the horse. When the horse is attentive and respectful to what you have asked of him, then it is okay to reward him. When you do this, the horse will learn that he is only rewarded for positive behavior. As discussed previously, repetition is extremely important when training your horse, but when sessions become too long they might end up deteriorating the learning process. Teaching your horse any trick is like studying. It is extremely effective when you have short and frequent sessions. For example, when you cram-study for a test the night before, most of it is stored in short-term memory. After that test, you forget mostly everything that you had studied. Another negative about long sessions of training is that your horse has a higher chance of becoming frustrated with you. Begin by pulling slightly on his leadrope in the direction of his body to get him to back up. When he does this, firmly tap on his chest with one or two fingers and use the short command “back.” As you repeat this your horse will begin to associate a touch to the chest and a verbal command with backing up. Reward him as you are teaching these commands. Eventually, you will be able to use the physical and verbal command without having to pull on the leadrope. After a few days of practice you will be able to tap firmly on his chest and he will back up, without a leadrope or a verbal command
