What truly defines a team as the best team in the nation? In the 1960’ a team would choose based on its record, teams its beaten, and quality of wins. This led to controversy considering that multiple voting polls would give a trophy to who they believed should be number one. Some years you had one team sweep all polls and be the undisputed national championship. On years where you had multiple powerhouse football teams such as 1964 with Texas, Alabama, and Arkansas it was hard to choose who should be number one. The biggest game was Arkansas against the number one ranked arch rival Texas Longhorns. Arkansas went into Austin, Texas undefeated on October 17, 1964. Arkansas had played many tough teams this year and had have come back from a 14-0 deficit to win with 31 straight points to beat Tulsa University. ”Arkansas returner Ken Hatfield provided the first spark racing 81 yards after a Longhorns’ punt to provide the first touchdown of the game in the second quarter”. Texas answered back early in the fourth quarter. Arkansas got the ball and did not stop till the horn sounded. Fred Marshall dropped back and threw back to wide receiver Bobby Crockett for a thirty-four yard touchdown to take the lead with a minute twenty-seven left. Texas did not give up as the offenses stormed down the field. Allowing Ernie Koy to plow over the defense, making the score thirteen to fourteen with under a minute thirty left. The Texas coach Darrell Royal went for two considering Arkansas’ defense was good and it would be hard to play in overtime. The quarterback for the longhorns dropped back and threw the ball, our defense being strong and one of the best in the nation tipped it causing an incompletion. “ Razorback All-American Ronnie Caveness made 25 tackles in the victory”(Trianor-1).The fact that the Texas Longhorns was ranked number one was a side gift. At the end of the season it was recorded that legendary head coach Frank Broyles called his dad about a job change. “Dad, keep that insurance job open for me,” Frank Broyles said. “I might be home quicker a lot quicker than I thought”(Schroeder-1). Jokingly said Coach Broyles thought about leaving with offers from other colleges some including multi-million dollar contracts offered and multi-million dollars guaranteed. While some coaches in this predicament would leave for the money and the better team. Coach Broyles saw that Arkansas was not going to give up and that Arkansas was going to do something big and accomplish something huge. Most of the seasons Arkansas played in ended up as a championship caliber season. One most known for is the 1964 undefeated season, This season made the Associated Press elect who the Association believed was the national champion till after the bowl season. The very next season Arkansas played at the same Cotton Bowl stadium to play present rival the Louisiana State Tigers.
