This supports Newport's claim by revealing to the reader that social media does not have to take an active role in the social lives of its users, and its lack of use will not deter their success. Although Newport has majored in a field dealing with the ins-and-outs of the technological world, his awareness and support of the lack of use of social networking is a sharp contrast. This is due to his expanded knowledge of the disadvantages of prolonged media intake, yet still has an ironic undertone as he doesn't advocate for such a large factor in the technological world that he works
