EQ: How did Poe use the literary device of setting to create a dark tone affecting the mood of the reader?
Edgar Allan Poe used the literary device of setting to create an intense, and suspensive dark mood for the reader by using the following elements: locale, elapsed time, and man-made geography.
The most important element Poe used is Elapsed time when he described on (538:2) every night at midnight the way that he describes every hour,minute, second creates more tension and suspense which keeps the reader intrigued. Also (541:2) when the cops arrived at the door at “four o’clock” how that makes you wonder , even more how did they find out?will they now? and how from midnight he had spent 4 hours doing something so horrible; patiently, and calmly.
