leaves you disturbed and intrigued right after you finish
it? Well, Edgar Allen Poe is a very distinct writer who
tends to use the element of setting in a very unsettling,
dark way. He directs these emotions in his story Tell-
Tale Heart by the way he uses lighting, time of day, and
elapsed time.
One of the main elements that Edgar Allen Poe uses
is lighting. Edgar tends to be very controlling in the
using this element. For example, in (532:2) where

how the elder’s room was pitch black. In this occurrence
the Mad Man says how he might of startled the elder yet
does not hesitate because of the pitch-black room.
Finally, in the last example (538-539:9,1), the Mad Man
accidentally slips his finger through the lantern and
light comes shooting out. This causes the elder to spring
up from his bed and stay awake and the make the ad
Man stay still for about an hour.
Another element Edgar Allen Poe uses in setting
would be time of day. This is a very important element
in setting because everything that happens in the story
is actually based on the time of day. The first example
that could be used to describe and show how the author
uses time of day would be (538:2). Here the mad Man
explains how during midnight is when he stepped
gently into the elder’s room. The second example that
could be used to describe the time of day would be
(541:3), the Mad Man says how its almost morning yet
its looks exactly like midnight.
The final element of setting out of the twelve that
Edgar used was elapsed time. The first example would
be (537:2) , this citation occurs in the beginning of
