The Hate You Give is an acronym for the saying “THUG” the full saying being. The “THUG LIFE” means, “The Hate You Give Little Infants Fucks Everybody.” The book The Hate You Give is about more than racism, it’s also about social injustice, being who you are, and speaking up for what you believe is right. The author uses the music, other people's POV, and a lot of figurative devices to help persuade the reader of their point. The book is also based on an actual event of the real-life police shooting of an unarmed black man, Oscar Grant, in California. She says, “This interview is the way I fight.” The author also uses music and shows, it’s one of the first things that is mentioned in the story. Everybody on the dance floor yells the ‘started from the bottom, now we’re here’ part. Some days, we are at the bottom in Garden Heights, but we still share that feeling that damn, it could be worse.” Is the first reference in the book and it begins to show one of the themes in the book. “‘Pac said THUG LIFE stood for ‘The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everybody.” “Mean what society gives us as youth, bites them in the ass when we wild out.” This is what the book is named after so it’s a huge theme and is brought up a lot during the book one of them being between Starr and her Dad and she says, “I think it’s about more than the youth though. I think it’s about us, period.’ ‘Us who?’ He asks. ‘Black people, minorities, poor people. Everybody at the bottom of society.’ ‘The oppressed,’ Daddy says” This proves that while racism is a theme in the book it’s not the main theme it's about more than
