In February 1990, 26-year-old Theresa Marie, or “Terri Schiavo”, was found by her husband, Michael Schiavo, unconscious on the floor in the hall of their home in Florida. After she was admitted to hospital doctors found that she had suffered brain damage due to lack of oxygen and fell into a coma that rendered her helpless. After two and a half months without improvement, her diagnosis was changed to that of a persistent vegetative state, a condition in which a medical patient is completely unresponsive and is only kept alive by artificial life support.
