West gate Mall Shooting
On September 21st, 2013 several gunmen flooded the upscale Westgate shopping mall in
Nairobi, Kenya. Attacking and holding the citizens of Nairobi hostages, while also killing a total of 60+ men, women, and children. The attack lasted four days coming to an end on September 24th, 2013. It was reported as an act of terror by the Islamist group Al-Shabaab. The story broke on major world news networks and media websites such as CNN, Fox News, Yahoo news, and Twitter. Each news outlet made it clear that the attack on citizens at Westgate mall was a terrorist attack on Muslims. The Washington Post reported that in October 2011 a series of explosions went off in various areas of Kenya. This was retaliation by the Islamist terrorist group Al-Shabaab, from operation Linda
Nachi which is a coordinated military operation in southern Somalia that was launched against the group by the Somali military and Kenyan military. Since Kenyan and Somali Military launched the operation, Al-
Shabaab has maybe very vocal threats against the countries. On September 21st, 2013 Al-Shabaab delivered on their promise with having between 10 – 15 masked gunmen entering into the Westgate mall. CNN reporting that the gunmen fought with policemen for 48 hours. They (the gunmen) were equipped with assault rifles and grenades explosives which had police urging the residents to stay away from the area until further notice. Fox news reporting that most of the fighting took place on the ground floor where the supermarket was. While none of the News networks or website could give a completely concrete total on how many victims had been killed in the attack. It was reported by theguardian.com reported that Kenya’s
Mbugua Mwangi who is the president of Kenya nephew and his fiancé Rosemary Wahito were killed in the mall attack along with Kofi Awoonor a poet and former diplomat, Annemarie Desloges, a border services official and the daughter of two retired diplomats, along with other international people that were slain in the mall attack. On September 27th, the stories the each of my media outlets were coming up with were all a little misleading. Some media outlets like CNN and the Dayton Daily News reporting there were only 60 deaths while Fox News and The Guardian UK reported 70. Yahoo News reported that no bodies have been retrieved from under the rubble since Kenya’s military secured the building. Whereas the Sun a United Kingdom paper said they were still discovering bodies. The news outlets couldn’t not confirm the deaths however just about every news outlet was focused on this being more of a terrorist act oppose to helping families identify bodies unspoken for. September 28, 2013, local news stations were reporting more positive things. The CNN
News Room stated thousands rushed to donate blood to victims. And others brought comfort food such cakes, cookies, and buttered bread. The citizen of Nairobi also comfort those who were escaping the scene of the attack as well as the bodies of the deceased men, women, and children. The Dayton Daily news also reported that some of the terrorist were from different areas of the world. They only identified one, a woman named Natalie from the United Kingdom. The only developments coming from the story of the Westgate Mall shooting now are stories of heroes , the men and some women who went into the mall to help get people to safety. Actually various media outlets have started to move on more American issues such as the government shutting down oppose to the Kenya terrorist attack. No major you U.K networks were even reporting on the situation. On September 29, 2013 myself personally could not find a single relevant and legitimately source on the topic is was literally as if the story had dis appear from the
