One of the best decisions I have made since choosing to attend The University of Texas at Austin was to join one of the university’s student run organizations, Texas 4000. Texas 4000’s missions is to cultivate student leaders and engage communities in the fight against cancer. For the rest of this year and the first part of 2019, I will prepare for a 4,000+ mile bike ride from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska that I will embark upon in the summer of 2019 with the rest of my 90 teammates. Along the ride, which is composed of three separate routes of about 30 riders each, my team members and I will stop at different cities along the way to give presentations regarding cancer awareness and at different hospitals along the way to offer our support. This organization is so important to me because I have the opportunity to spread the pillar of knowledge to my family, friends, and UT community and can in turn foster change and fight for a cause that needlessly affects so many people each day. …show more content…
Texas 4000 for Cancer is a 501c-registered charity that donates the funds raised by riders and the team as a whole directly to cancer research, primarily through grants. In the past years, our grants have gone to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, LIVESTRONG Foundation, and University of Texas at Austin Department of Biomedical Engineering.
