I have lived with the thing now for the last eighteen years. The thing comes once a year and each year I must pay the ultimate price. Until now few have been aware of the unlocked; the infathomable power beyond human understanding.
Therefore, I have written this first-hand account on the matter, so that my sufferings should not go wasted. Perhaps in my lost soul countless others could save their own.
The day I learned of the thing was the first day of my vacation. I had only just finished a book tour for, 'Murder Tricks’ the last book I would ever write.

The man was certainly not the smartest I had met, though he was better suited for the needs of our partnership than any before him.
Aside from the field work Gills and I did as partners, another several months was involved in organizing research notes, hundreds of photographs, crime scene reports, court documents, and conducting interviews.
Our most recent had been our biggest break. It seemed everyone wanted to know the Eddy Chronkite version of the Chaves murder case from 'Murder Tricks.'
The only thing I wanted was to forget so I made a promise to myself: I would not be writing again.
I was apathetic to the thought of dedicating the rest of my summer on yet another case but Sheriff Miles McKinny was a friend of mine. Was he not there would be no reason for him to call at two am insisting I make the drive out to Hillborough.
"M' tell'n ye," McKinny shouted into his receiver, "Yer g'nna hafta see'es one fer' yerself."
Although already sure I would not take on any new case, I humored old McKinny's request to join him at 1401 Quaker Road in Hillborough.
"This better be good" I said through the down-rolled
