vHa Jin’s short story “Saboteur” revolves around Chiu Maguang, a college lecturer with acute hepatitis, and his run-in with the police. Chiu and his bride are heading back to Harbin from their honeymoon in Muji, and they are eating near the Muji Train Station. While eating, a policeman pours hot tea on Mr. Chiu and his wife’s feet, and then claims that Chiu got his shoes wet himself. Chiu argues with the policeman, which results in another policeman joining the first to beat up Chiu and arrest him. The chief of the bureau imprisons Chiu for sabotage, and because he is a Communist Party member. Chiu refuses to admit to the crime he supposedly committed, otherwise he would be free to go.
