In the reading “ The Abominations of Leviticus” by Mary Douglas, the author explains how this chapter in the bible is perplexing at first, as it states what creatures people were or were not allowed to consume. Douglas and Maimonides state these rules are meaningless, and Robertson Smith and Frazer also say the rules are irrational. Furthermore, after going over Leviticus, the author goes in depth that these laws are to assist people to avoid evil, to be perfect, plus holy. Moving forward, first the author explains the rules seem confusing since the bible does not say why these animals must be avoided. Instead, it just goes on to list animals to avoid or consume.
