The book I am reading is The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian By Sherman Alexie. This book focuses on the daily lives of the Indian culture. I picked this novel because I have always wanted to learn more about Indian culture, and I enjoy a book with a humorous style of writing.
Through what we have learned in class over this semester, “equality matters but some may not think quite the same way.” This quote shares how wrong some people are, “Coach said I was the best shooter who’d ever played for him,”(Sherman, 142) Even in sports this matters, some may think that an Indian in particular may not be able to play basketball or be the best shooter on the team but in fact anyone of any race can master the game. A vicious cycle that never ends and we see this through Juniors words. “He took what little money we had and ran away to get drunk.” (Sherman, 150) It is sad but also true, many Indians who live in these reservations are addicted to alcohol or drugs. Due to lack of money in these families the parents are very stressed and depressed and a way out of feeling like that turns them to alcohol or drugs. In our discussions in class we have learned that this destroys the relationship between parents and their children. The children believe their parents only care about spending money on their next drink or drug of choice. This must change for the sake of the children living on
