This is important as the exercise that was performed had compared whites vs. Hispanic and black students which resulted in white students performing higher in their reading skill. The research suggests that forcing stereotypes on minorities resulted in the students performing low on their exams. This key evidence addresses the lack of motivation in the classroom. (“The Academic Achievement Gap” Columbia University) “By age three, children of professionals have vocabularies that are nearly 50 percent greater than those working-class children, and twice as large as those of children whose families are on welfare.” Through the research, Columbia University has shown many families who have a high-income status invest time and money on their children’s education while families with financial instability do not have the same opportunity for their children. The Columbia University research seems to suggest that self-esteem can be an issue within students in low-income families as their performance might be different than other students who have more opportunities. This results in lack of determination from children because they do not receive the same opportunities as other children. Resources should be given within the classroom for students to reach a higher level in their academic life.
