1a. The time period shapes the novel by giving the reader information on how the world at the time was.
1b. Life wasn’t great, but it wasn’t terrible either. They were often farmers who only made enough food for their families.
1c. The most surprising historical aspect of the book for me is probably the fact that people where still getting whipped. I knew that people got whipped but I didn’t know it was this bad.
2a. When I first thought about St. Anthony’s, I thought that it was harsh to the orphans. Ren described how they were whipped. Later I realized that it was just the time period.
