The alchemist gives Santiago a push when he wants him to convert into the wind, but this helps Santiago finally come in contact with his Personal Legend and gain the understanding of the power of love. It’s the alchemist who gives Santiago the ability to finally reconnect with the Soul of the World, and achieve his dream to arrive at the Egyptian pyramids. The alchemist teaches Santiago all about Alchemy and what it means to be a true alchemist, he shows Santiago not to be afraid and to continue his dreams no matter the consequences. He’s the last to help Santiago through his journey to the Egyptian Pyramids. All the characters in this novel are symbols of strength that help Santiago come in contact with his Personal Legend. Melchizedek, the crystal merchant, the Englishman, the camel driver, Fatima, and the alchemist all symbolize love and strength because they believe in Santiago, all of them encourage Santiago to pursue his Personal Legend. They help Santiago realizing the meaning behind love and the importance of understanding his heart. For example the alchemist taught Santiago that the reason we should always follow our hearts, “Because, wherever your heart is, that is where you’ll find your treasure” (128). It’s important that we focus on the words each character mentions when they speak because they speak to the readers, too. Especially on the alchemists words because he mentions to Santiago that it is important that he listens to his heart, but as readers, it’s important that we listen to our hearts as well.
