Fitzgerald was a man that looked down upon the people that lived the American dream. He characterized Gatsby by this, coming from nothing but making something of himself. However, when Gatsby dies he makes it so that he doesn’t end up with Daisy and no one comes to his funeral. This is one of his overarching arguments that, the American Dream is just that, a dream, and as hard as people try to reach and achieve it, it will only end in their demise. This argument seems cynical, and this is the mood of the novel's end. The reader can tell by the way Fitzgerald comments about the rich, and the 1920’s in general, that he was not fond of the people or this era.
