The American Sociological Association, or ASA, is the major professional organization in North America. (page 85). The ASA maintains a strict code of ethics consisting of principles and ethical standards to be used in discipline. The ASA also describes procedures for filing, investigating, and resolving, complaints of unethical conduct. (page 86). I believe that the ASA crafted such a detailed set of ethical principles to make sure that researchers do not get out of hand in executing experiments and research. The ethical principles set try to limit and discontinue studies that are or could become harmful to the participants. This may include having the participant recall traumatic events, embarrassing, lying, or even harming the participant.
