What does the backpack mean in We are not here? The backpack is a symbol that appears at the start of the book. It is not really mentioned in the book, it is only an item they carry around. So how is this symbol in the book? Well, it shows how Pulga left everything behind. How he only brought so little and left everything to find a better life.

What does the backpack really symbolize in the story? When he started packing his bag, it was empty, only carrying two items.
