The story starts out normally, with Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus being born. As things progress, the twisted king comes into play. King Herod was the ruler of Israel at the time, and was scared when he heard about the birth of Jesus. He felt threatened, so he summoned the three wise men that were on their way to Jesus, and asked them to report back to him on their findings so he could “pay his homage”. When the wise men arrived they brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh and were overcome with joy. The night before they left, they had a dream that warned them of King Herod’s true intents. The wise men turned on Herod and went a different path home. “When Herod saw that he had been tricked by wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that the had learned from the wise men.” This is not the typical happy depiction associated with Jesus’s birth.
