In the mid-fourteenth century, a plague took over Western Europe. This plague was called The Black Death because people afflicted with this disease would break out with black boils that were filled with pus and blood. Along with these boils, people experienced vomiting, fever, chills and eventually death. It is estimated that approximately 75 million lives were lost due to the Black Death. The Black Death became one of the most devastating disasters in European history as no one was prepared to face this horrible disease. The disease was a fast-spreading disease, and unfortunately it was not known at the time how the disease was contracted or how the disease could be cured.
