First, Liesel and Rudy together overcome their shortage of food by stealing. Although it is not the right thing to do, it was necessary as it was for their health and survival. To solve this, they steal different foods from all different places like apples from farms. Both faced many roadblocks trying to steal food but with their teamwork, they were able to fulfill their goal. Death states while they were stealing apples:“Two debundant apple thieves whispering ‘Liesel are you sure? Do you still want to do this? Look at the barbed wire Rudy. It’s so high’”(152). By doing this, Rudy and Liesel were able to escape their hunger and desire for food. Second, Rudy is able to help Liesel to overcome the loneliness in her heart by always being right by her side. Together they do almost everything, plan and do rebellious acts, stay hungry, happy carefree and even a little bit tired. This is proven when Rudy plans on stealing from Otto Sturm. Rudy says, “All those priests, they’re all fat anyway. They could do with a feed a week or so. Liesel could only agree... she was pretty hungry herself”(152). To begin, right from the start Hans was able to aid Liesel and overcome her sadness and grief of losing her brother and her real mother by accompanying her with his love. Whenever Liesel dreamt about her brother and mother “she would wake up swimming in her bed, screaming and drowning in the flood of sheets...Possibly the only good to come out of [those] nightmares was that it brought Hans Hubermann, her new papa into the room, to see her, to lover her”(36). Hans went through his own way to help Liesel, her new daughter, in the time of her sadness. Therefore, he cheers Liesel up in her horrific phase in life with the medicine of love. Next, Hans helps Liesel with her difficulty with reading and writing. Reading and writing are not easy when faced the pressure to know as she was older. When Hans finds out she is not able to read when he asks to read a part of The Grave Digger’s Handbook. He asks her to “‘read some for [him].’ ‘But of course, she couldn’t. When he made made her point out any words she could read and actually say them, there were only three’...’This time when he came back, he said’ ‘Actually I have a better idea.’ ‘In his hand, there was a thick painter pencil and a stack of sandpaper.’ ‘Let’s start from scratch’”(67). Hans never gave up on Liesel and Liesel never gave up on herself and was
