What caused John Boyne to write this particular book? Tip: If you don’t remember the class discussion, you can look online. (30 pts.) John Boyne wrote this book because he wanted to show the difference in lives in wartime Germany. The different families and cultures were treated so differently, and he wanted to show that in a story. He proved that life truly wasn’t fair and if you were different, there was no mercy. They were cruel and rude to anomalies in society. It was unfair and he needed to show what could happen because of those differences.
Describe the relationship between Bruno and Gretel? What kind of characters is each of them? (40 pts.)
Bruno and Gretel are siblings, living in wartime Germany. Since their father is in power, they live a privileged life. They’ve always had the luxuries that others didn’t, and are spoiled from the wealthiness of their family. Gretel likes to take control, and doesn’t enjoy time with her brother. They were taught from the beginning that anybody besides Germans are bad. They don’t get to second guess the government because if they do, they get punished for it. She is unhappy because of the things they do to the Jews. It’s horrible things and her stance makes a lot more sense than the soldiers’ points do. In the book, Lieutenant Kotler mentions something about how they smell awful both regularly and when they burn, referring to the way they get rid of the bodies. Also, throughout the book, the soldiers treat the Jews horribly. From speaking to their actions, they aren’t sensible.
