1. My initial response while reading The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao was that it was very culturally involved and it taught me about the way of life for the Dominicans. For example, the author uses humor to show us that Dominican men are always focused on having a woman in their life. They always believe that “they will always get the girl”. What I remember best from the reading is that the main character, Oscar, was always trying to get a girlfriend. He was successful at times, but also unsuccessful! He was just a typical teenage boy who wanted to be somebody’s boyfriend. I always had empathy for him throughout his experiences in the Dominican.
2. One of the themes I found in the book is that superstitions and beliefs of curses are very apparent in many nations in the world, this is expressed through the characters actions and beliefs. Oscar learned many things about curses while he is visiting relatives in Santo Domingo, he explains that, “The Admiral’s very name has become synonymous with both kinds of fuku, little and large, to say his name aloud or to even hear it is to …show more content…
The book is trying to tell us that everyone wants to be loved and should be able to experience love. The feeling of love is a natural part of life that everyone should be fortunate enough to experience. It doesn’t matter how old you are, it is something that people want to experience throughout their life. Unfortunately, Oscar’s parents were not good role models for a loving relationship. His first love, Ana, opened up his eyes to what being in a relationship involves. When he first met her, he explained , “Instead of making an idiot out of himself as one might have expected given the hard fact that this was the first girl he’d ever had a conversation with, he actually took it one day at a time. It was amazing how it was between them.”(Pg. 37). Although the relationship doesn’t last long Oscar is grateful to experience his first
