Understanding Fear
We all practice different emotions everyday, one common emotion is fear. Authors Michael Dorris, Stephen King, and Alice Walker explains their own definition of fear in their own articles. Dorris fears reality, King fears curiosity, and Walker fears of others opinions. Out of these three, Walker’s article is closest to my definition of fear.
In Michael Dorris’s article “The Broken Cord,” He talks about his hopes and lost dreams for his disabled son Adam. Into the article, Dorris shows his fear of facing the reality of himself and his son. Dorris begins by talking about his plans for Adam’s birthdays. She feels her beauty makes her who she is and she enjoys the attention she receives. After those beautiful self indulged stories, she focuses on the time when the “accident accorded” causing her to lose her eye which altered her life for it altered her appearance . In her eyes, she was now ugly. Reading the rest of the article, readers begin to realize her definition of fear is of other's opinions. Walker talks about the times she kept her head down, afraid of what other would say now that she isn't up to par. “I tell it i hate and despise it. I do not pray for sight. I pray for beauty (445),” everyday people are constantly worried if their appearance is equivalent to the ideal image and fear of what others will say if they aren't. Then that fear sitting in their head, but in reality others are thinking the same exact thing. I fear of not being good enough, which Walker talks greatly about. Growing up I’ve been told I’m overweight, underweight, not tall enough, not pretty enough, and even smart enough. Now in college, I can’t help but feel I’m not doing enough, not working enough, or not learning enough. That feeling and that fear is always in my head which keeps me from appreciating my accomplishments. My fear can be seen as bad, but also as good. Fearing of not being good enough pushes me to excel in everything I do. I
