Compare and Contrast in “The Cask of Amontillado” The stories “The Cask Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe and “The Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner; both have two characters that are unaware of what is about to happen to them, but they differ in character in certain circumstances. Both Homer and Fortunato die. Fortunato, insults Montresor will his remarks, as if Montresor was beneath his standards. Homer was a man who Emily falls for and the townspeople complain he likes young men. Through; the characters, Edgar Allan Poe and William Faulkner demonstrate how demanding they are. Homer; was a man who was only seen with young men, which brings shame upon the town. Upon first sight of Homer, Emily was in love. Her cousins relay the message about the man that she plans to be with forever stating: “he like men instead of women” (pg. 448). Homer disappears until the family leaves. Then he reappears at the house of Emily’s and was never seen again. Fortunato; was a man with a big ego and thinks he is better that anybody else. He makes harsh remarks toward Montresor about not being a mason. Montresor feels threating by it. So, he later comes with a plan for retaliation. Montresor knows Fortunato is feeble when it comes to alcohol. He asks Fortunato if he has time, could he taste the Amontillado, to see if it is real sherry, before he buys its and if he did not have the time he can get Luchesi to try it. Fortunato makes a comment saying “Lushes cannot tell Amontillado from sherry”
