Poe uses mood to create a distinct feel in every one of his stories. He does his best to incorporate every component of a story to assist in setting the mood. In “The Raven”, his most successful story, poe uses the dark, dreary december night setting as a means to set the melancholy mood. Also in “Tell-Tale Heart” his explanation of the caretakers hatred for the old man’s “pale blue eye”(poe) sets a horrific and suspenseful mood to make the reader want more. In “Cask of Amontillado”, an excellent example of irony is when Fortunato says “I drink, to the buried that repose around us.”(Poe) Poe uses irony here because Fortunato doesn’t know what Montresor is going to do to him. Likewise he uses imagery in “The Raven” to boost the effect of the story.
